My Personal Style

The style of my writing is intended to replicate what would take place if you and I sat down at the kitchen table together for your “one-on-one” introduction to the watch world.  It’s a “stream of consciousness” thing.

A few more words about the book itself:  To satisfy those of a critical frame of mind, whether by nature or by choice, I have purposely inserted mistakes in composition, syntax, spelling, and punctuation into the text.

Please excuse the frequent use of the word “I”.  This book is based entirely on my own experiences.  These experiences and anecdotes have not been exaggerated or enhanced in any way – they all happened exactly as described.  I chose not to collaborate with others due to the fact that I would not be able to verify their experiences, and also because I did not want to argue about content and editing.

Another purpose is served by limiting the scope of the book in this way – it demonstrates that it’s possible for almost anyone to make money in the watch business in the secondary market.  I’m certainly not a genius or a person with extraordinary special gifts, and I have had no formal training in watches or business.  So if I can make it, why can’t you?

So, here it is, warts and all.  No editors, no advisors, no ghost writers or publisher - just me and my twenty years in the watch business!

As you read through this book, where you would like to be, and perhaps where you will “fit in” in the watch business will become increasingly clear.  Remember, too, that the business can be tailored to suit both your current and future circumstances.  Be patient, read each chapter carefully and thoughtfully, and be realistically conservative as you enter the watch world.

Happy Hunting!

Chapter Two

Know Before You Go!

What will you be looking for?  Since there are literally millions and millions of watches in circulation, this is a very broad subject.  You can make a great profit on anything from a child’s comic character wristwatch from the 1950’s, to a railroad grade pocket watch from 1900.  In my opinion, your best choice to get on the “fast track” to learning what to look for is to purchase “the book” referred to in chapter one.  This is the Complete Price Guide to Watches, by Gilbert, Engle and Shugart.

“The Book”

The focus of the book you are now reading is to help you to be successful in operating your own business buying and selling watches.  It is beyond the scope of this book to provide what “the book” (also known as “the Guide”) provides – an encyclopedic collection of photographs with a guide to the value of each watch pictured.  The primary focus of the Complete Price Guide to Watches is to help you recognize watch brands and models through the pictures and illustrations, and to get an idea of the value of these watches as they pass from the hands of a knowledgeable seller to a knowledgeable buyer, in other words, in the watch collector world.  The focus of the book now in your hands is to teach you how to find watches at far lower prices than listed in “the book” and to sell them for as much as or more money than listed in “the book.”  More on that later…

Let’s get back to the benefits of the Complete Price Guide to Watches.  You will learn the difference between a chronometer and a chronograph.  You will learn what a complication is and how it affects the value of a watch.  You will see how watches have changed down through the years, with variations in styling, function and materials.  You will discover that the general public is almost completely unaware of the names of some of the most valuable watches you can find – names like Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and Vacheron & .....
